KEIRA

“Your supplies. Hand them right over. Right now. Or I’ll shoot.”

Keira stood by Nisha’s side. A man stood up the road, a few metres away from them. Sweat trickled down his face. He was shaking. He looked thin. About thirty-something, similar age to Keira by the looks of things.

And he was holding a gun.

Dangerous and desperate?

The worst combination.

Dad stepped forward. “Listen—”

“I don’t want you telling me to listen,” the man said. “I don’t want you telling me anything at all. Just hand me your supplies. Hand me the rucksacks. And you can walk away. All of you can walk away.”

Rufus growled. Keira’s heart pumped fast. And it started pumping noticeably faster when she saw where that gun was pointing.

Nisha.

“Throw me the rucksacks,” the man shouted, his voice not quite as shaky now. “And we don’t need any trouble here.” He looked back. Over his shoulder. Eyes darting nervously around their surroundings. It was getting darker. And Keira swore she could hear noises. Gasps. Growls. Somewhere in the distance. Somewhere in the shadows. They needed to get away. And they needed to get away fast. There was no standing still in this world. The infected were never far behind.

“We’re not gonna throw you the rucksacks,” Dad said.

The man lifted his shotgun. His eyes widened. He moved that shotgun between Dad, Nisha, and Keira, and even Rufus, trying to find a weakness in them, trying to find the biggest bargaining chip.

“You turn around,” Dad said. “And you walk away, pal. We pretend nothing happened here.”

The man shook his head. “You don’t get to make the demands.”

“I beg to differ,” Dad said. “Walk away. Nobody needs to get…”

A blast.

A spark.

Right at Keira’s feet.

It took her a few seconds to realise what’d just happened. And then she smelled the smoke, and she saw the way the man was holding that gun shakily.

He’d fired.

That man had fired.

Right at her feet.

He lifted the shotgun. His grip was still loose. Shaky. And his eyes were bulging wide. Fear. That was the expression in his eyes. Pure fear.

But, again, fear and desperation was a dangerous combo.

Keira’s ears rang.

She looked at Nisha, who squeezed her eyes shut.

Rufus barked.

And Dad’s eyes were wide. And he looked a little more nervous than before, too. Because this man. He wasn’t bluffing.

“You idiot,” Dad said. “Are you trying to draw the infected towards us?”

“I’m not messing around,” the man shouted, his voice cracking. “Hand over your rucksacks. Now. Or the next bullet’ll hit one of you.”

Keira looked at Dad. And Dad looked right back at her. They had to let these rucksacks go. They had to hand them over. It was shit. Really fucking shit. But their lives were worth more than their supplies.

“What do you need?” Keira asked.

Dad’s eyes widened. “Keira—”

“Look,” Keira interrupted. “We need some of this stuff. But we probably don’t need it all. There’s only so many of us and only so many supplies left, right?”

The man shook his head. “Don’t try talking me out of anything. Or talking me round.
